Major Fossil Discovery Helps Reveal Origins of Sunflower Family

A recent discovery of a 45 million year old fossil in northern Argentina has helped uncover the evolution of the Sunflower Family.  Based on genetic comparisons it was believed that the  Sunflower Family, whose scientific name is Asteraceae, had its roots in South America about 50 million years ago.  The discovery of fossil evidence  significantly strengthens this connection.  The Asteraceae family includes sunflowers, daisies, and chrysanthemums.
