Natural History Wanderings

I just finished reading two excellent e-books by Rob Sheppard. What is most appealing to me about his books is that Rob is both a naturalist and a nature photographer and the way he integrates them in his work. He also makes excellent use of the e-book format including impressive videos with sound, using his skills as a videographer, and photos that can be zoomed in on. In Reports from the Wild, he talks about his experiences visiting areas, observing nature, his personal reactions to the locations and his efforts at photographing them. The areas he talks about are quite diverse including the woods of Minnesota, chaparral of the Santa Monica Mountains, desert of Death Valley, and Everglades of Florida. An even bigger bargain is Rob’s FREE e-book A Nature Manifesto. In this book Rob discusses nature photography today. He talks about the historical roots as well as the impact of technology. He challenges nature photographers to create photos that have impact. He discusses self-defeating attitudes and ways to counter them. He explores how our internal dialogue can be an asset or hindrance. He emphasizes something nature photographers all too often forget to do: become really engaged with nature not just recording it.
