Consequences Of Invasive Alien Species

If you ever wondered what’s the big deal about alien plants you might want to read this story in BBC Nature. Not all alien plans pose serious problems, but when one is invasive the consequences can be enormous.

The story BBC News – Report tracks threats from Europe’s alien invasion reports that invasive species are a greater threat to Europe’s biodiversity, economy and human health than previous believed. Europe has 10,000 non-native species and at least 15% are considered “invasive” and have negative ecological or economic impacts. Ecosystems and biodiversity are weakened by pollution, climate change and [habitat] fragmentation. Competition, predation and transmission of diseases between alien and native species are frequent and can pose a major threat to native species
