Rocky Mt. Fall Color: Early Appearance updated 9/7/12

Updated 9/7/12

Several postings on the Rocky Mountain Nature Photographers Forum Fall Color are reporting early showings of fall foliage. Here are some of the early reports:

One stand is changing quite a bit along Fall River road to Saint Mary. Patches of changes along I-70 to Loveland Pass, but most trees are still very green to light green.9/2/12

Guanella Pass near Georgetown on 8/31. Some trees on the highest parts of the hillsides and a few along the roadside have turned or are beginning to turn. I’d say no more than 10% is yellow so nothing to get too excited about yet, though several local residents said this is about a week or so earlier than normal. Could be a first half of September peak there. The tundra on Mount Bierstadt is well into its autumn reddish color right now too. 8/31/12

Monarch and Cinnamon Passes this Labor Day weekend and there’s quite a bit of yellow on both. There’s still some light greens and even a few reds, but I’d say both of those areas will be at peak in about 1-2 weeks. 9/4/12

There was a bit of yellow this weekend up by Silverton and Molas Pass, not much but enough to make me smile.9/4/12

Here is what I have as of September 2nd around Pikes Peak:
Woodland Park, 1-2% Change mainly in the shrubs
Aspens surrounding Pikes Peak, a sprinkling of Yellow but mainly green
Area around Florissant, a few groves are already completely yellow with 15% more starting to turn. 9/4/12

We went up Owl Creek Pass and to Silver Jack on Sunday. We saw a few patches here and there already changing (see attached photo taken from the East Fork Trail), but nothing too major yet. The trees next to the river on the East Fork road (before you get to the trailhead parking lot) were already peaking. I don’t know if those were birch or ash, they had small narrow leaves and were yellow

I have seen some nice photos that were made at Island Lake this weekend. 9/5/12
