Birding the Sacramento and Colusa National Wildlife Refuges

Updated 1/17/12

We went birding at the Sacramento and Colusa National Wildlife Refuges today.  One of the attractions was the rare Falcated Duck Rare at the Colusa Refuge. He was there when we arrived around 9:30 and was still there around noon when we left (along with many more birders) after driving the loop. We had great views through scopes but didn’t get any good photos. Check my earlier posting Falcated Duck Still At Colusa NWR- Updated 1/11/12) for more information about the Falcated Duck and links to a video and great photo. Yet another outstanding photo of the duck can be seen at:  http://rauzon.zenfolio.com/p859914566/h3983fe12#h3983fe12

If you are interested in seeing the Falcated Duck it is suggested that you go right away as the incoming rains may chase it away.

Highlights at the Sacramento refuge were the thousands of Snow and Ross’s Geese (mainly at the western side of refuge near the second stopping area), a rare dark morph (“blue goose”), Ross’s Goose, and a third year Bald Eagle. There were many water birds at both refuges.  To see my bird list for today go to Read More. Here are a some photos from today.

  1. Wow, a loggerhead shrike. Very cool. The bird platform with the crowd of falcated duck-lovers was classic.
